An “extreme heat” warning has been issued by the Met Office for Sunday as it warned of life-threatening weather conditions.

The weather service issued an amber warning for heat likely to lead to “potential serious illness or danger to life” and said hot weather would lead to “widespread impacts on people and infrastructure”, with the danger “not limited to those most vulnerable to extreme heat” such as the elderly.

The Met Office warned of disruption to electricity, gas and water supplies, as well as cancellations and delays on trains and roads, with a danger to passengers and motorists stuck in stationary vehicles.

It is the third time an amber heat warning has been issued since they were introduced last year.

Hot weather could break all-time records this weekend, with some models suggesting conditions hotter than 40C are possible. The current high heat record is 38.7C, set in 2019.

On Monday, trains were cancelled, speed restrictions introduced and a railway line caught fire as temperatures reached 30C in the south east of England.
