► Shoplifting offences in the UK have risen 5% in the last year – with retail staff reporting 118 violent incidents every single day.
But should you, or a staff member, intervene if you see someone shoplifting? Would you?
Former Morrisons store manager Sean Egan, who had worked in a store in Walsall for nearly 30 years, confronted a shoplifter and tackled him to the ground when he became abusive. Mr Egan expected support from Morrisons, but instead was sacked.
Morrisons said it could not comment on individual cases, but the health and safety of all colleagues and customers was of paramount importance.
