Parts of the UK are set for disruptive wind and rain this week in the first named storm of the season.

Storm Austen will impact southern England and Wales from Thursday night into Friday morning, bringing wind speeds of 50 to 60mph and 20 to 30mm of rain in some areas.

Some 70mph winds may also be possible along exposed coasts, the Met Office has said.

A yellow warning for strong winds has been issued from midnight to midday on Friday, with forecasters stating that there could be damage to homes and disruption to transport.

The area covers most of England’s southern coast between Cornwall and Brighton, and stretches north to include southern Wales.
