Starmer had previously assured the House of Commons that “due process” had been followed in the decision to appoint Mandelson, but it has now been disclosed that the Foreign Office overruled the advice of security and vetting officials.
The UK’s Ministerial Code states that ministers should resign if they knowingly mislead parliament, and Starmer is expected to make a statement in Parliament to clarify the record and address questions about his handling of the situation.
