Following a top-level Cobra meeting to discuss the impact of heatwaves and droughts, Andy Burnham has called on people not to use disposable barbeques to reduce the risk of starting fires.

There have been over a thousand wildfires in England and Wales already this year – as many as in the whole of last year.

And the head of the National Fire Chiefs Council has warned of ever greater pressure on fire and rescue services as the hot, dry weather meant those fires were spreading faster and burning for longer.
