This morning, the prime minister tried to convince his party he can turn things around after the local election defeats, saying incremental change had not been enough.
It was widely billed as a make-or-break speech for the prime minister. But instead of convincing his own MPs, he shouldn’t resign following Labour’s massive losses in last week’s local elections; Keir Starmer is now under even more pressure to go.
Rebel backbencher Catherine West called the speech “too little, too late”, inviting MPs to call for a leadership election in September. Many have done so, and some ministerial aides have resigned
For most of them, that’s to give Andy Burnham time to get elected back into parliament so he can stand as party leader.
But that means the other candidates, most obviously Wes Streeting, must decide whether to seize the initiative and challenge Starmer now, or let the Burnham bandwagon determine events.
