The town of Falkirk is bracing for the UK’s biggest hike in council tax, as the local authority faces a crisis of costs.

Council tax rates have been frozen or capped for much of the last two decades in Scotland, but this year the Scottish government has granted local leaders the power to go their own way. Falkirk’s tax hike is the UK’s most extreme case, with a 15.6% increase.

Residents are branding this decision as “absolutely ridiculous” and others saying they’re having to choose between “getting food or paying the council tax”.

Sky’s Scotland correspondent Connor Gilles visited the area and uncovered councillors threatening to call police after receiving “nasty threats”.
