Sir Keir Starmer vowed to “take back control”, as he set out plans to reform the immigration system.

Starmer promised a selective but fair system, which will cut the number of people coming to the UK.

Among the proposals, a longer timeframe to apply for citizenship, and a higher minimum standard of English – the prime minister warning that the country risks becoming an “island of strangers” without better integration.
