The former health secretary, Wes Streeting, told Labour members yesterday that: “Britain’s future lies with Europe – and one day back in the European Union.”

Labour’s Lisa Nandy has told Sky News that Wes Streeting’s ambition to rejoin the EU is “odd”. The culture secretary said: “If rejoining the EU is the answer, then essentially what we’re saying to people is ‘life was fine in 2015. We just need to go back there’.”

Meanwhile, Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch said his comments suggested Labour MPs do “not have a plan for the country”.
