Nigel Farage has just taken aim at Andy Burnham’s grand plan to “rewire Britain” — and Reform UK has now made a major move right in Burnham’s own backyard.
Burnham says Britain needs a long-term project.
Farage says Britain is broken now.
Burnham says it may take 10 years.
Farage says we do not have 10 years.
And now Reform UK has announced Sian Astley as its candidate for Mayor of Greater Manchester, with a pledge to scrutinise contracts awarded during Andy Burnham’s time as mayor. That matters, because Burnham is no longer just a local Labour figure — he is being positioned as a potential future Prime Minister, talking about “Number 10 North,” devolution, redistribution, and a “rewired Britain.”
So before Burnham gets to sell the Manchester model to the entire country, maybe voters should ask:
What actually happened in Greater Manchester?
Who got the contracts?
Where did the money go?
What was delivered?
And is Greater Manchester really better off after years of Labour control?
This is bigger than one mayoral race.
This could become a referendum on Burnham’s record, Labour’s model of government, and whether Britain can afford another decade of speeches, slogans, bureaucracy, and managed decline.
Burnham says “rewire Britain.”
Reform says “fix broken Britain.”
Burnham says “trust me with more power.”
Reform says “let’s scrutinise what you did with the power you already had.”
Tell me what you think in the comments.
Is Andy Burnham the answer — or just another Labour rebrand?
