Actor Idris Elba says there is no “one size fits all” answer to tackling knife crime, after victims’ families urged mandatory jail terms for possession.
Dr Sinead O’Malley, whose daughter was killed in Nottingham last year, has called for compulsory prison sentences however Elba said while deterrents were crucial, but that some people carry knives out of fear.
The Tories and Labour have both both pledging a crackdown on zombie knives with fresh legislation from the Government set to be introduced today which aims to “close the loophole” on outlawing weapons.
Zombie-style knives were first banned in 2016, but a poorly defined description in current laws allows retailers and online marketplaces to sell dangerous knives and machetes without breaking the law.
GP & broadcaster Dr Renee Hoenderkamp joins TalkTV’s Kevin O’Sullivan and Alex Phillips to discuss the UK’s knife crime problems.
